چکیده

Scott K. Powers, Ph.D., Ed.D. Professor Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences and Department of Physiology University of Florida Gainesville, Florida In addition to the cardioprotective effects of regular exercise, there is also a growing interest in nutritional antioxidant supplementation as a strategy to protect the heart during a heart attack. Indeed, the role that dietary antioxidants play in providing cardiac protection is a rapidly expanding field of research. The purpose of this review is to summarize our current knowledge regarding the cardioprotective effects of both exercise and dietary antioxidants

The Role of Exercise Preconditioning in Cardioprotection against Ischemia Reperfusion Injury

Cardiovascular diseases are still the main cause of mortality around the world. Therefore, it is essential to develop practical means to reduce their burden. A wealth of evidence supports the role of physical exercise in attenuating many of the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, endurance training warrants protection against myocardial infarction. Exercise, even if performed ...

Ischemia-reperfusion-induced calpain activation and SERCA2a degradation are attenuated by exercise training and calpain inhibition.

The Ca2+-activated protease calpain has been shown to play a deleterious role in the heart during ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). We tested the hypothesis that exercise training would minimize I/R-induced calpain activation and provide cardioprotection against I/R-induced injury. Hearts from adult male rats were isolated in a working heart preparation, and myocardial injury was induced with 25 min ...

Perspectives in innate and acquired cardioprotection: cardioprotection acquired through exercise.

Emerging evidence indicates that exercise training can provide significant protection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. In this brief review, we provide a synthesis of current literature in the field and summarize the findings to date. Our intent is to identify the unique elements of cardioprotection acquired by exercise, and to illustrate what distinguishes this physiological acq...

Exercise Provides Direct Biphasic Cardioprotection via Manganese Superoxide Dismutase Activation

Epidemiologic investigations have shown that exercise reduces morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease. In this study, using a rat model, we attempted to determine whether exercise can reduce ischemic injury to the heart and elucidate a mechanism for the cardioprotective effect of exercise. Results showed that exercise significantly reduced the magnitude of a myocardial infarction i...
